For those accepted into Japanese universities, graduate schools, vocational schools, or long-term language programs (study-focused, not full-time employment).
Key requirements
- Official acceptance/enrolment letter from the school/university.
- Proof of sufficient funds for tuition and living expenses (bank statements, sponsor letter, scholarship).
- School often assists with COE application for long-stay student visas.
Work while studying
- With permission for activities outside status, students may work part-time up to 28 hours/week during term (higher in long breaks).
Typical documents
- Admission letter, academic transcripts, passport, photos.
- Proof of finances and housing.
- Completed visa forms and COE (usually arranged by the school).
Duration & renewal
- Visa length aligns with course duration (months to multiple years).
- Renewable while enrolled and in good standing.
Post-study options
