Standard eligibility
- Typically several years of continuous legal residence (often around 10 years as a general guideline).
- Stable income, tax/social insurance compliance, and clean conduct.
- Accelerated routes exist for Highly Skilled Professionals and certain spouses.
Points-based & accelerated routes
- Japan’s Highly Skilled Professional system awards points (qualifications, income, research, language, etc.).
- Meeting high thresholds can shorten eligibility (e.g., 3 years or even 1 year for very high points).
Documents & evidence
- Proof of continuous residence and employment/income.
- Tax and social insurance payment records.
- Valid passport and justification for PR (family integration, employment stability, community ties).
