For skilled professionals via points-tested Skilled Migration (189/190) and Employer Sponsored routes (482/186).

Overview

Australia’s work visa framework targets skilled workers who contribute to the economy through Skilled Migration and Employer Sponsored streams.

Skilled Migration (Points-tested)

For qualified individuals with occupations on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL); selection via SkillSelect based on points (age, education, English, work experience).

  • Skilled Independent (Subclass 189): No sponsorship required; live and work anywhere in Australia, selected via EOI in SkillSelect.
  • Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190): Requires state/territory nomination aligned with regional occupation demand; apply post-nomination via SkillSelect.

Employer Sponsored

  • Temporary Skill Shortage (Subclass 482): Employer sponsors to address labour shortages where local skills are unavailable.
  • Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186): Permanent pathway for nominated skilled workers to live and work in Australia.

Pathway to PR

Many employer-sponsored and skilled routes lead to PR after requisite work experience and meeting eligibility criteria.
